P3T Studio is a start-up that had designed a domestic device for processing the plastic waste (mainly the used PET bottles) into a good quality 3D printing filament. Thanks to it, the used plastic materials, failed 3D prints and the filament leftovers can have a new use, instead of rotting in the land fields. This saves a lot of electricity, fuel, water and also significantly reduces the CO2 emission. The CO2 emission reduction is a result of replacing the thermal recycling with material recycling. To add more, plastic waste is processed by the producer of waste, so no transport process of garbage is required. This allows to avoid unnecessary NOx and CO2 emission. It can also be helpful in getting rid of the plastic waste in the water tanks and the oceans. Thanks to our device, the no-waste lifestyle can be brought to a new level, as the users can see at first hand that things that they used to consider as a garbage can save their time and money. This can allow them to see how the inhouse recycling can be profitable for not only the environment, but also their wallets.

The potential savings are one of the most important tangible advantages of our device. It is achieved in a few ways, but most significant of them are reduction of the junk fees and the 3D printing material cost (up to 95%). To amplify the potential economical profits of the device, we plan to develop the mobile application for selling bottles/filament alongside the device. This will create a large marketplace between the entrepreneurs and domestic users and reduce the amount of wasted plastic even more.

From the start we were designing the device for the private customers with a perspective to develop the industrial scale devices in a further perspective. With that in mind, we focused on making the it user-friendly and, most importantly, safe to use. For that reason, a series of strict criteria (like the filtration of microparticles) were satisfied. Despite of all of these, we didn’t forget about the esthetics. We designed the device in a way, that it does not have to be hidden, but can be proudly displayed next to the other technological gadgets.

The mechanism of the device is quite simple and can be reduced to the following steps:

  • The waste materials are put in the device by the user. They are mechanically crushed in smaller elements and transported to the main chamber of the device. This ensures reliable operation and high quality of the final product.
  • In the main chamber, the material is heated slightly above the polymer melting temperature. When the whole material is liquified, the mixing process starts. Depending on the user demand, the additional additives can be added to the mixture in order to modify its final parameters, like color, hardness or mechanical durability. When the mixture is fully homogenized, the next step starts.
  • The mixture is then extruded and the filament thread is formed.
  • The filament is quickly cooled and winded up on a spool. The 3D printing material is ready to use.
